The Facebook ad is not subtle. STOP USING SQUARE.<\/strong> Get a free Clover reader, save on fees, receive 24\/7 support and\u2014most importantly\u2014pay 0% processing fees<\/strong>. For a small business that watches two or three percent disappear from nearly every card sale, that number gets attention immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a catch, but this time we do not have to dig through a maze of fine print to discover it. National Bankcard’s own website explains the mechanism directly: its Cash Discount Program passes the cost of accepting credit cards to the customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zero Percent Does Not Mean Nobody Pays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

National Bankcard<\/a> promotes what it calls cash-discount pricing. The company’s site says merchants can pay 0% processing rates by passing the processing cost to customers. In other words, the processing expense has not vanished. The business is changing who absorbs it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That can still be useful. A business with thin margins may prefer a pricing structure that protects more of each sale, especially when customers are already accustomed to seeing different prices or card-related adjustments. But \u201c0% processing\u201d sounds very different from \u201cyour customer pays the processing cost,\u201d and that distinction deserves to be understood before the terminal lands on the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Free Clover Offer Has Conditions Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

National Bankcard advertises free placement of several Clover devices and values them at hundreds or even more than a thousand dollars depending on the hardware. Its website also states that the offer is for new customers, requires opening a merchant account through National Bankcard, is subject to change, and carries additional terms. Seasonal businesses are excluded from the free-equipment offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, that does not automatically make the offer bad. Equipment subsidies are common in payment processing because the processor expects to earn money from the merchant relationship over time. The important part is reading the agreement as a processing contract, not treating the hardware as a gift that arrived independently of everything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFree\u201d Hardware Can Still Create Switching Costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A business changing point-of-sale systems is not merely swapping one tablet for another. Inventory, menus, receipts, employee accounts, reporting, integrations, online ordering and customer data can all become part of the system. Even when there is no cancellation fee, migrating away later can have a real operational cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means the right comparison is not \u201cfree Clover versus paid Square reader.\u201d Compare the processing structure, the equipment terms, software fees, required services, funding times, support, contract language and what happens if the business wants to leave. Hardware is one line in the decision, not the decision itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will Customers Care About the Card Price?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Passing card costs to customers can improve the merchant’s margin, but it can also change the checkout experience. Some customers barely notice. Others dislike seeing a higher card price or perceive the adjustment as an extra fee. The effect depends on the type of business, average ticket size, local competition and how clearly the pricing is communicated before the customer reaches the register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A business should model both sides of the equation. Saving several hundred dollars a month in processing can be meaningful. Losing customers because the new price structure feels annoying can be meaningful too. The spreadsheet needs both columns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ad’s Comparison With Square Is Doing Marketing Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Square is easy to understand because its pricing is relatively visible and its hardware\/software ecosystem is familiar. National Bankcard positions itself as the alternative with more pricing models, free equipment placements and live support. That may be attractive to some merchants, but the flexibility also means the merchant should insist on seeing the actual proposed numbers for their own business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c0%\u201d is a headline. Your effective cost, your customer’s cost and the terms attached to the account are the actual product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions to Ask Before Switching<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ask exactly how the cash-discount program changes the posted price, how debit cards are handled, what signage is required, which monthly or software fees remain, what Clover equipment is being placed, who owns that equipment, whether there are minimum processing requirements, and what happens if you close the account. Get the answers in writing before replacing the system you already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That conversation is less exciting than the giant red STOP USING SQUARE<\/strong> headline, but it is the conversation that tells you whether the offer saves money for your business instead of merely moving the expense somewhere less obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bottom Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

National Bankcard’s 0% claim is not a claim that card processing has become free. The company’s own explanation says the cost is passed to the customer through its Cash Discount Program. The free Clover hardware is also tied to opening and maintaining the merchant relationship under the offer’s terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe that trade makes perfect sense for your business. Just do the math on the whole arrangement. Processing fees have not disappeared; they have simply changed seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
