Not customers. Not a product strategy. Not a shipping plan, advertising budget, recognizable brand, return policy, customer-service system or any of the other irritating little details normally associated with running an ecommerce company. Apparently what you need is a store, preferably free, preferably built with artificial intelligence, and preferably finished before your coffee gets cold.

We have collected enough advertisements making variations of this pitch that they have started to look less like isolated promotions and more like an entire industry. One promises a Shopify store created with AI in under 30 minutes while announcing that thousands of free stores have already been built. Another advertises a Shopify store “built by AI” and “live in minutes.” Others surround the same basic proposition with phrases such as “winning products,” “done for you,” “top-selling products,” massive order counts and testimonials suggesting that ecommerce success may be only a few clicks away.

Before we go any further, however, something needs to be made extremely clear.

Shopify is not the bad guy in this episode.

Shopify is a legitimate, mature and extremely useful ecommerce platform. It provides hosting, security, payment infrastructure, inventory management, order processing and a large ecosystem of integrations that would otherwise require a business owner to assemble and maintain independently. For someone who has no desire to learn web hosting, databases, WordPress, software updates, security, backups and payment integrations, paying Shopify every month can be a perfectly sensible business decision.

Our problem isn’t Shopify.

Our problem is the growing collection of third-party marketers, store builders, dropshipping programs, coaches and “done-for-you” business sellers who use Shopify as the foundation for a much bigger promise.

Shopify sells ecommerce infrastructure.

Some of these third parties are selling the impression that the infrastructure is the business.

Those are not the same thing.

The Store Can Really Be Built in 30 Minutes

Here is where Something Stinks sometimes becomes less satisfying than simply yelling “SCAM!” at everything on Facebook.

A Shopify store probably can be built in 30 minutes. With a prepared theme, automated product imports, AI-generated copy and a system designed specifically to duplicate a basic ecommerce structure, thirty minutes isn’t particularly difficult to believe. Modern website tools have made the mechanical process of putting pages, products and a checkout button online remarkably fast.

That isn’t necessarily deception.

The question is what the person watching the advertisement believes those thirty minutes have accomplished. After thirty minutes, you may genuinely have an ecommerce website. You do not automatically have an ecommerce business.

You don’t have customers simply because the checkout button exists. You don’t have traffic because products were imported. You don’t have a reputation because an AI generated a logo. You don’t know whether the supplier will ship reliably, whether customers will tolerate the shipping time, whether returns will destroy your margins, whether advertising will cost more than the profit on each sale or whether the supposedly “winning product” has already been placed into thousands of nearly identical stores.

The website was never the hardest part. That is the part the third-party shortcut industry doesn’t always emphasize nearly as enthusiastically as the giant word FREE in the advertisement.

“Free Store” Does Not Mean “Free Business”

This distinction becomes especially important when an advertisement offers a free Shopify store.

A third-party company may genuinely charge nothing to generate the initial storefront. That does not mean Shopify suddenly stopped charging for Shopify.

Shopify’s Basic plan currently runs roughly thirty to forty dollars per month depending on billing terms and promotions. There may also be domain costs, payment-processing charges and optional applications. A dropshipping business may add another service for product sourcing and order fulfillment, and those services commonly carry subscriptions of their own.

One of the store builders we examined, BuildYourStore.ai, actually demonstrates this distinction fairly well. Its free store-building offer can legitimately cost nothing from the builder itself, while its own support information explains that operating the resulting business still requires services such as Shopify and may involve additional platforms such as AutoDS.

That matters because “We will build the storefront for free” and “You can operate this ecommerce business for free” are entirely different statements.

The first can be perfectly true.

The second generally isn’t.

Using current pricing as a rough comparison, a Shopify Basic subscription paid annually lands in the neighborhood of $350 per year before the domain, payment processing, premium applications or other services are considered. Add a typical dropshipping automation or fulfillment platform and it is easy for the recurring software stack to move toward $600 per year or more. Pay monthly instead of annually and the total can climb further.

None of those costs make Shopify bad.

Shopify tells customers what Shopify costs.

The concern is the third-party advertisement that places “FREE STORE” in enormous letters while the ongoing cost of operating that store is something you discover several clicks later.

That is an advertising problem, not a Shopify problem.

There Is Another Way to Build the Same Kind of Store

This is also where we should disclose our own bias at Valhalla Computers.

We generally prefer owning as much of the underlying infrastructure as practical.

Register the domain. Buy ordinary hosting. Install the ecommerce software. Build the site. Maintain it yourself or hire someone to maintain it for you.

Platforms such as WooCommerce and OpenCart are free and open source. WordPress itself is free and open source. That means the basic ecommerce software does not require a monthly platform subscription simply for the store to continue existing.

You still need somewhere to put it.

A domain might cost somewhere around $10 to $20 per year depending on the registrar and extension. Basic shared hosting capable of running a modest small-business ecommerce site can often be found for somewhere between a few dollars and roughly ten dollars per month, although introductory prices, renewal prices and hosting quality vary enormously.

That means a technically capable owner can sometimes operate the underlying website for somewhere around $50 to $150 per year instead of several hundred dollars per year in platform subscriptions.

There are tradeoffs.

With Shopify, much of the infrastructure is somebody else’s problem.

With WooCommerce, OpenCart or another self-hosted platform, much more of it becomes your problem.

Updates are your problem. Backups are your problem. Security is your problem. Plugins breaking at 2:00 in the morning may become your problem.

For some business owners, Shopify’s monthly cost is a bargain because they don’t want those problems.

For someone comfortable administering websites, a self-hosted open-source system may provide significantly more control at a considerably lower direct cost.

Neither choice is inherently wrong.

The important part is knowing which one you are buying and why.

Then We Get to the “Winning Products”

This is where many of the third-party Shopify pitches become much more interesting.

A store is created for you and stocked with a selection of products described as “winning,” “proven” or “top-selling.”

That sounds fantastic.

But what exactly makes a product a winner?

A product that sold extremely well for one advertiser six months ago does not automatically become profitable when placed into your store today. Profitability depends on supplier cost, advertising cost, competition, shipping time, presentation, customer demographics, reputation, product quality and dozens of other variables.

There is another obvious problem.

If the same service creates thousands of stores and repeatedly supplies customers with selections from the same pool of supposedly winning products, those store owners may eventually find themselves competing against one another with very similar websites selling very similar merchandise from very similar suppliers.

At that point the “winning product” may still be winning.

It just might be winning primarily for the people selling entrepreneurs the stores.

Be Careful With the Success Stories

One advertisement in our collection pairs the message “Your Shopify store. Built by AI. Live in Minutes” with a video claiming a four-year-old brand received 5,700 orders in 26 minutes.

The wording matters.

It doesn’t say a brand-new AI-generated business went from zero to 5,700 orders in 26 minutes.

It says four-year-old brand.

A four-year-old business might already have an email list, previous customers, social-media following, advertising history, recognizable brand name, established audience and several years of reputation behind it.

Those things can produce an enormous burst of orders.

They are also things your brand-new thirty-minute storefront does not receive when somebody finishes importing the products.

The claim itself may be perfectly legitimate.

The interesting part is the marketing context around it.

Put “AI STORE — LIVE IN MINUTES” next to “5,700 ORDERS IN 26 MINUTES” and the human brain performs some remarkably convenient arithmetic even if the advertisement never explicitly tells it to.

That is precisely why we inspect the wording instead of simply reacting to the impression.

We Have Already Seen What Happens After the Store Is “Finished”

This investigation also hits particularly close to home because our first client gave us a real-world example of what happens after somebody has already paid significant money to have an ecommerce website handled for them.

We will leave her name out of this because the point isn’t to embarrass anybody involved.

She told us she had spent a considerable amount of money on her ecommerce presence and ultimately wasn’t happy with what she ended up with.

When we examined the site, the actual business was not difficult to understand. She sells professionally printed scrapbook pages that are physically produced and shipped to customers.

But the online presence had accumulated problems.

Older pages and search-engine results still described products as digital downloads even though the business was now selling physical printed products. Legacy ecommerce URLs remained indexed. Some current pages were clearer while other terminology could still leave a visitor wondering whether they were purchasing something printable or something that would arrive in the mail. Certain product and category areas weren’t presenting the inventory as cleanly as they should. Search-engine migration and indexing still needed attention.

The important point isn’t that the website was terrible.

It wasn’t.

The important point is that somebody had already built the ecommerce website, accepted a substantial amount of money for the work, and the business owner still ended up with an online presence she didn’t fully trust or feel satisfied with.

That is the part of ecommerce the thirty-minute-store advertisements rarely discuss.

The website being online does not mean the job is finished.

Old URLs matter. Search indexing matters. Product descriptions matter. Migration matters. Customer expectations matter. SEO matters. Payment configuration matters. Shipping rules matter. Branding matters. Maintenance matters.

And somebody eventually has to take responsibility for all of it.

Our first client’s experience reinforced something we already believed:

Paying someone to build an ecommerce store does not guarantee that you will receive an ecommerce business you understand, control or are happy with.

The Third-Party Shortcut Industry Is What We’re Investigating

That distinction is worth repeating because we don’t want this episode misinterpreted as “Shopify sucks, build everything yourself.”

That isn’t our conclusion at all.

Shopify is doing what Shopify says it does.

It provides an ecommerce platform.

The stink appears when somebody standing between Shopify and the aspiring business owner begins selling something much larger than the platform itself.

“Free Shopify store.”

“Winning products included.”

“Built with AI.”

“Done for you.”

“Live in 30 minutes.”

“Top-selling products.”

Those individual statements may even be true.

The problem is the story they can create when assembled together:

We have already handled the difficult business stuff for you.

That is the promise that deserves scrutiny.

Because the difficult business stuff generally begins after the store has been built.

They Sell the Store Because the Store Is the Easy Part to Sell

This may be the most important sentence in the entire investigation.

They sell the store because the store is the easiest part to sell.

A storefront is visible.

You can show somebody a beautiful homepage and they can immediately understand what they received.

Customer acquisition isn’t like that.

Neither is reputation.

Neither is market research.

Neither is finding reliable suppliers.

Neither is writing good product descriptions, creating useful content, answering customer emails, processing returns or spending six months figuring out why your Facebook advertising costs more than the product generates in profit.

Those things are difficult to wrap in a shiny bow.

A website is easy.

So the website becomes the product.

And sometimes the prospective entrepreneur starts believing that receiving the website means most of the entrepreneurial work has already been completed.

It hasn’t.

Should You Use Shopify?

For many businesses, absolutely.

If you want a managed ecommerce platform, don’t want to administer your own server and value predictable infrastructure more than minimizing monthly software costs, Shopify deserves serious consideration.

If you’re technically comfortable and would rather own your hosting environment, WordPress and WooCommerce, OpenCart and other open-source options can provide another path with potentially much lower recurring costs.

If you don’t know how to build any of them, hiring somebody may also be perfectly reasonable.

Just understand what they are actually selling you.

Ask who owns the domain. Ask who owns the hosting account. Ask what the monthly costs will be after the promotional period. Ask which paid applications are required. Ask what happens if you stop paying. Ask whether your content and customer data can be exported. Ask where the products are coming from. Ask who handles fulfillment. Ask what ongoing maintenance is included.

Most importantly, don’t confuse “your store is finished” with “your business is finished.”

They are very different milestones.

The Something Stinks Verdict

Shopify passes the sniff test.

It’s a real platform providing real infrastructure for real ecommerce businesses, and for plenty of merchants the convenience is easily worth the monthly cost.

This episode isn’t really about Shopify at all.

It’s about the cottage industry that has grown around Shopify selling shortcuts, automated businesses, instant stores, winning products and the seductive idea that technology can remove most of the hard work from becoming an ecommerce entrepreneur.

Sometimes the storefront really is free.

Sometimes AI really does build it in minutes.

Sometimes the advertised products really have sold successfully somewhere else.

None of those things automatically creates a profitable business.

The store may be real.

The shortcut needs context.

VERDICT: SHOPIFY ISN’T THE PROBLEM.
