Artificial intelligence has become the technological equivalent of hot sauce. Somebody discovers that it improves one thing, and suddenly there is a person standing in the kitchen wondering whether it belongs on breakfast cereal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI is useful. Sometimes astonishingly useful. It can help organize enormous amounts of information, identify patterns that would take a human hours to find, assist with writing and research, generate concepts, automate repetitive work, improve accessibility, help programmers locate problems in code, assist small businesses that cannot afford a department full of specialists, and give someone staring at a blank page enough momentum to finally get started. There are legitimate reasons artificial intelligence has become one of the largest technological stories of our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is that somewhere between \u201cAI can help us do this\u201d and \u201cAI should be involved in everything,\u201d the technology industry misplaced a very important question: Does this actually need AI?<\/strong> Increasingly, the answer appears to be irrelevant. Companies are attaching AI to products because investors expect to hear the letters. Software developers are adding AI buttons because competitors have AI buttons. Marketing departments are rewriting perfectly understandable product descriptions so they can announce that something is now \u201cAI-powered.\u201d Startups are building artificial-intelligence solutions to problems most people did not realize they had because, quite frankly, they did not have them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have entered the age of AI because AI<\/strong>, and that is not always technological progress. Sometimes it is simply technological enthusiasm without adult supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a crude analogy that explains the situation remarkably well. Most men have a penis. That does not mean it needs to be stuck into every available hole. Artificial intelligence deserves roughly the same degree of discretion. Having access to a technology is not, by itself, an argument for using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look around at the products now being advertised as AI-powered. We have AI toothbrushes, AI mattresses, AI refrigerators, AI coffee makers, AI note-taking systems, AI scheduling tools, AI email assistants, AI browsers, AI search engines, AI photo editors, AI customer-service agents, AI hiring systems and AI applications designed to summarize the summaries produced by other AI applications. Sooner or later somebody is going to release an AI-powered hammer that analyzes the nail before hitting it. The original hammer will remain available for $12.99. The AI hammer will require an account, an internet connection, a firmware update and a $7.99 monthly subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the danger of confusing complexity with improvement. Sometimes a button should just be a button. Sometimes a search box should search. Sometimes a thermostat should let you select a temperature. Sometimes software should perform the task you purchased it to perform without first offering to have an artificial-intelligence conversation about your goals. Technology is supposed to remove friction from our lives. When AI adds additional menus, subscriptions, delays, uncertainty and complexity to something that previously required one click, we have somehow managed to automate our way backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This does not mean AI itself is the problem. The problem is using AI without identifying what problem it is supposed to solve. At Valhalla Computers, we use artificial intelligence. There is no reason to pretend otherwise. AI can be extraordinarily useful during brainstorming. It can help organize research, explore different approaches to a subject, examine wording, develop concepts, identify gaps in an explanation and dramatically accelerate certain portions of a creative workflow. But AI remains part of the process. It is not necessarily the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine someone writing an article about caring for horses during extreme summer heat. Artificial intelligence can help organize the subject. It may suggest discussing hydration, shade, electrolytes and warning signs of heat stress. Useful. But someone still needs to ask practical questions. How frequently should the water trough actually be checked? What happens when algae develops? How quickly does water become unpleasantly warm when the trough sits in direct sunlight? Should the trough be moved? How often should it be scrubbed? What debris commonly falls into it? How does somebody recognize that a horse is drinking less than normal? Those details transform an article from something generated to fill space into something potentially useful to the person reading it. AI can provide assistance. Human judgment determines whether the result deserves to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same principle applies to programming. AI coding assistants can save tremendous amounts of time. They can write repetitive functions, explain unfamiliar code, suggest debugging approaches and help experienced developers work faster. They can also confidently produce code that is completely wrong. Occasionally the mistake is obvious. Occasionally it works beautifully right up until the moment it deletes something important. A competent developer understands that AI-generated code still requires inspection because the computer producing it does not experience anxiety when your database disappears. You do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI customer service provides another perfect example. There are situations where an automated assistant is fantastic. \u201cWhat time do you close?\u201d \u201cWhere is my order?\u201d \u201cHow do I reset my password?\u201d \u201cWhat is your return policy?\u201d Those questions do not necessarily require a human being to stop working and type the same answer for the eight-hundredth time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then somebody has a complicated billing problem involving three transactions, a cancelled order and a refund that never appeared. The automated assistant cheerfully responds, \u201cI understand you’re asking about a refund! \ud83d\ude0a\u201d Yes. That is why we are here. Then it proceeds to explain the return policy again. That is the moment when AI stops being a convenience and becomes an obstacle standing between the customer and the person capable of solving the problem. The company may proudly announce that AI reduced customer-service contacts by 60 percent. Customers may describe the same accomplishment differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creative work has its own version of this problem. Artificial intelligence can generate photographs, illustrations, music, videos, articles, voices and increasingly sophisticated animations. That technology opens extraordinary opportunities for people who previously lacked the money, equipment or technical ability necessary to create those things. That is genuinely exciting. But accessibility does not eliminate taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generating an image is easy. Knowing which image communicates the right idea is harder. Generating 500 words is easy. Knowing whether those 500 words say anything worth reading is harder. Generating a video is becoming easy. Knowing where the camera should appear to be, what the character should do, when the joke should land and why someone should keep watching after the first three seconds remains considerably harder. AI lowers production barriers. It does not automatically supply judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes the correct judgment is do not use AI here at all<\/strong>. There is value in something being handmade. There is value in speaking with a human being. There is value in an actual photograph. There is value in hearing someone’s imperfect natural voice. There is value in writing a personal message yourself instead of asking software to manufacture sincerity on your behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine receiving this: \u201cHappy anniversary, sweetheart. I asked my AI assistant to analyze our relationship and generate an emotionally resonant expression of affection optimized for your personality.\u201d You may technically have remembered the anniversary. Sleeping on the couch remains a distinct possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some experiences derive their value specifically from the knowledge that another person made an effort. Automating the effort can automate away the meaning. Businesses need to understand this especially well because customers are becoming increasingly capable of recognizing artificial interactions. People already encounter automated emails, AI-generated advertisements, chatbots, synthetic photographs and algorithmically produced content throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, human becomes a feature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A real person answering the telephone becomes unusual. An article containing genuine experience becomes noticeable. A handwritten note becomes memorable. A photograph of the actual business becomes more trustworthy than another immaculate stock-style AI image depicting five impossibly cheerful employees pointing at a laptop. Ironically, the more artificial intelligence spreads, the more valuable authentic human involvement may become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not mean businesses should reject AI. It means businesses should use it strategically. The question should never begin with, \u201cWhere can we add AI?\u201d The question should begin with, \u201cWhat are we trying to accomplish?\u201d If AI solves the problem faster, cheaper or better without introducing unacceptable disadvantages, use it. If traditional software already solves the problem perfectly well, use traditional software. If a person can handle the task better and human interaction matters, use a person. If a pencil and a piece of paper are the best tools available, congratulations. You have discovered technology with exceptional battery life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is another reason restraint matters. Every time AI is placed between a user and a task, another layer of uncertainty enters the process. Traditional software generally follows defined instructions. Click Save and the document saves. Generative AI interprets. Interpretation can be wonderful when flexibility is required. It can also be maddening when precision is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you ask an AI to make something \u201ca little warmer,\u201d \u201cmore professional,\u201d \u201cless busy\u201d or \u201cfriendlier,\u201d interpretation is exactly what you want. If you need a database field copied exactly from Column A to Column B without improvisation, creativity suddenly becomes significantly less charming. Good technology selection means understanding the difference. AI excels at some fuzzy problems because fuzzy problems previously required human interpretation. That does not mean fuzzy technology should replace every deterministic tool we already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We should also stop pretending that every AI integration represents innovation. Sometimes it represents marketing. Adding a chatbot to an application does not necessarily transform the application. Calling an algorithm \u201cAI-powered\u201d does not automatically make the underlying product better. Putting artificial intelligence inside an appliance does not mean anyone asked for it. And attaching a monthly subscription to a feature that used to work locally is not innovation merely because a neural network became involved somewhere along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumers are allowed to ask a remarkably simple question: What does this do for me that the previous version didn’t?<\/strong> If the answer is clear, fantastic. If the answer requires a fifteen-minute presentation containing the words ecosystem, synergy, transformative, next-generation and paradigm, keep one hand on your wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The healthiest future for artificial intelligence is not one where AI disappears. It is also not one where AI becomes mandatory. It is one where the technology becomes another tool in the toolbox. Sometimes you grab the drill. Sometimes you grab the screwdriver. Sometimes you use the table saw. And sometimes the job requires a hammer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody walks into a workshop holding a chainsaw and announces, \u201cWe’ve invested heavily in chainsaw technology, so from now on we’re using this for everything.\u201d At least nobody who should remain in possession of all ten fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artificial intelligence should be treated the same way. Use it where it improves the result. Use it where it saves meaningful time. Use it where it makes something possible that previously wasn’t. Use it when it helps humans do better work. But don’t force it into products, conversations, creative work and everyday tasks simply because the technology exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI does not have to be everywhere to be revolutionary. In fact, learning when not to use it<\/strong> may eventually become one of the most important AI skills anyone can develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To AI or not to AI? That really is the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes the smartest answer is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
