Something Squirrely — Episode 4: Unlimited AI Images for $99? Sure — If Your Computer Can Handle It

There are advertisements that immediately smell bad, and then there are advertisements that simply make you tilt your head, squint a little and wonder where the squirrel buried the nuts.

This one falls into the second category.

An advertisement from Distinct AI recently crossed my screen promoting Render FX, a desktop artificial-intelligence image generator. The pitch is refreshingly different from most of the AI services filling social media right now: pay once, own it forever, no subscriptions, no credits and unlimited image generation.

That certainly got my attention.

Anyone who has spent much time working with generative AI knows how quickly credits can disappear. You finally get the composition right, but the person’s hand looks like it was assembled during a power outage. Generate again. The face changes. Generate again. The text is wrong. Generate again. The dog suddenly has six legs. Generate again.

Every attempt takes another bite out of the credit balance.

So the idea of paying $99.99 once and generating images as often as you want sounds pretty damn attractive.

And after looking into Render FX, here’s the surprising part: that basic premise appears to be legitimate.

Render FX really does run locally on your computer. Distinct AI currently sells it for $99.99 and advertises no subscriptions, no generation credits and no usage limits. Instead of sending your prompt to somebody else’s data center and charging you every time their GPUs do the work, Render FX uses the computing power already sitting inside your machine.

That is actually a pretty clever business model.

It also explains exactly where the squirrel buried the nuts.

Unlimited Does Not Mean Unlimited Computing Power

The advertisement says:

“Pay once. Own it forever.”

It also promises:

“No subscriptions. No credits. Just one payment.”

And:

“Generate unlimited images with Render FX.”

All of those statements can be essentially true because Distinct AI is not paying for your generations.

You are.

Not through credits or a monthly subscription, but through the computer sitting under your desk.

That distinction matters because local artificial intelligence requires considerably more computing power than browsing the web, answering email, running Word or watching YouTube.

Render FX’s official technical specifications list 16 GB of system RAM as the minimum, while the recommended configuration jumps to 32 GB of RAM. For GPU acceleration, the company recommends a modern NVIDIA GeForce card with 12 GB of VRAM, or supported Intel graphics hardware. The software also requires about 15 GB of storage before we even start considering additional AI models downloaded through its Model Hub.

That is where the advertisement becomes a little squirrelly.

Those specifications are not outrageous for a serious gaming machine, workstation or content-creation PC in 2026.

They are also not the specifications I would assume are sitting inside the average household computer.

There are plenty of perfectly usable computers still running 16 GB of RAM with integrated graphics or lower-end discrete GPUs. Those machines can browse the web, run office software, edit photographs, manage WordPress, stream video and perform normal everyday work without breaking a sweat.

Local AI generation is a different workload.

A computer can technically meet the minimum requirements and still provide a very different experience from the slick, nearly instantaneous image creation implied by an advertisement.

“Runs” and “Runs Well” Are Two Different Claims

Distinct AI deserves credit for publishing its actual hardware requirements.

The company does not hide them once you reach the product page.

The minimum configuration specifies Windows 10 or 11, a reasonably modern multicore processor, 16 GB of RAM and integrated or discrete graphics at least in the Intel Iris Xe class. The recommended setup doubles the memory to 32 GB and suggests considerably stronger graphics hardware.

The company also says Render FX can use CPUs as well as AMD, Intel and NVIDIA GPUs, and its Model Hub attempts to identify which model variants are compatible with the hardware installed in your system. That’s a sensible design. Different AI models demand different amounts of memory and computing power, so allowing the software to adjust itself to different hardware makes the program accessible to more people.

But accessibility and performance are not the same thing.

Distinct AI’s marketing says Render FX is “Fast, Optimized on Any Device” and claims that whether someone uses a lightweight laptop or high-end workstation, the software adapts to provide quick and responsive generation.

That is where I would temper expectations.

The company itself acknowledges elsewhere that CPU-based generation can be slower than GPU acceleration. One of the AI models offered through its ecosystem, for example, can run using CPU-only variants with roughly 24 GB of system memory, but Distinct AI explicitly warns that generation speeds will be slower than GPU-accelerated setups.

That is simply the reality of local AI.

The software may work.

That does not mean your $399 family laptop is suddenly going to behave like an AI workstation.

Your Computer Becomes the Data Center

The easiest way to understand Render FX is to think about what normally happens with an online AI image service.

When you use a cloud generator, your computer mostly acts as the interface. You type the prompt, send it through the Internet and somewhere inside a data center a very expensive GPU performs the actual generation.

That hardware costs money to purchase.

It costs money to power.

It costs money to cool.

It costs money to maintain.

That is one reason so many AI services use subscriptions, credits or generation limits.

Render FX removes that expense from Distinct AI by moving the computing job into your house.

Your CPU or GPU runs the model.

Your RAM holds the workload.

Your storage contains the models.

Your electricity powers the generation.

Suddenly the idea of “unlimited generations” makes perfect sense.

There is no mysterious breakthrough that somehow made AI computing free.

The computing bill changed addresses.

That is not a criticism.

For the right person, it might actually be preferable.

If You Already Own the Hardware, This Could Be a Really Good Deal

This is where Something Squirrely differs from Something Stinks.

We are not looking at a fundamentally ridiculous idea.

Quite the opposite.

If someone already owns a reasonably powerful gaming or content-creation computer, paying $99.99 once for a local AI image generator could be far more appealing than continuously purchasing cloud credits.

The ability to experiment without watching a credit counter has real value.

Anyone creating graphics regularly knows that successful generative-AI work rarely happens on the first attempt. You adjust the prompt, alter the composition, change the style, generate several variations, find one you almost like and then spend another six generations trying to recreate it without destroying the part that worked.

A credit-based system can make experimentation feel expensive.

Local generation removes much of that pressure.

Distinct AI says Render FX currently provides access to multiple generative models and 17 optimized variants, with models designed for different hardware configurations. Its August 2026 update also expanded the Model Hub and said additional models are planned as free downloads over time.

The program also added Style Reference, larger batches of image variations, expanded hardware support and improved model compatibility detection. This indicates that Render FX is still actively being developed rather than being a one-time software release tossed onto Facebook and forgotten.

For somebody with the right computer, there is quite a bit to like here.

But What If You Don’t Already Own the Hardware?

This is the question the Facebook advertisement does not put in large letters.

Suppose somebody sees:

$99.99. Unlimited AI images. No subscription.

They are running an ordinary home PC with 16 GB of RAM and integrated graphics.

The software may install.

It may generate images.

But if performance is slow enough that each attempt becomes an exercise in patience, the experience they imagined when viewing the advertisement may be very different from the experience they actually receive.

Upgrading changes the economics.

Adding RAM is relatively inexpensive on systems where memory can actually be upgraded.

Graphics hardware is another matter.

A graphics card with substantial VRAM can easily cost several hundred dollars, and upgrading a GPU may also require a stronger power supply or a case capable of physically accommodating the card. Laptop owners may not have any practical upgrade path at all.

At that point the $99.99 “one payment” AI generator becomes:

$99.99 software plus whatever it costs to own a computer capable of running it well.

Again, that does not make the advertisement false.

It makes the advertisement incomplete.

And incompleteness is where squirrels tend to live.

“Own It Forever” Also Deserves a Little Translation

There is another phrase in the advertisement worth examining:

“Pay once. Own it forever.”

Most consumers understand what they mean.

You are not paying a monthly subscription and the software does not suddenly stop working because your credit balance reached zero.

That’s attractive.

Legally, however, Distinct AI’s End User License Agreement makes an important distinction: you receive a license to use the software; you do not actually own the software itself. The standard license generally permits one copy on one computer at a time, with specific exceptions listed for some of the company’s other products.

This is common software licensing and hardly unique to Distinct AI.

Microsoft, Adobe and countless other companies have used similar language for decades.

Still, there is a difference between the ordinary consumer interpretation of “own it forever” and the legal reality of “you possess a continuing license to use the software according to the EULA.”

That does not make the pitch dishonest.

It simply makes it marketing.

The Hardware Requirement Is Actually the Whole Point

There is an irony here.

The thing that makes the advertisement slightly misleading is also the thing that makes Render FX interesting.

Local AI means the program does not need to ask permission from a cloud service every time you generate something. There are no generation credits because there is no remote generation meter. Your files can stay local, and your creative experimentation is not dependent on someone else’s servers being available. Distinct AI explicitly positions local processing, privacy and freedom from cloud credits as core reasons for the product to exist.

Those are legitimate advantages.

But local processing necessarily means local hardware matters.

You cannot have one without the other.

Render FX is essentially saying:

“We’ll give you the AI software and models. You provide the miniature data center.”

For someone who already owns the miniature data center, that’s potentially a fantastic arrangement.

For someone who thought their six-year-old office PC was about to become an unlimited AI graphics workstation for $99.99, expectations may need adjustment.

This Is Why Minimum Requirements Matter

Software requirements used to be something nearly everyone checked.

Buy a PC game twenty years ago and one of the first things you did was flip the box over and compare the processor, memory and video-card requirements against your computer.

Somewhere along the way, mainstream software became lightweight enough and computers became powerful enough that many people stopped worrying about specifications.

AI is bringing that habit back.

Local artificial-intelligence software can demand enormous amounts of memory, storage and graphics processing compared with ordinary desktop applications.

Before purchasing Render FX—or any local AI package—look at both the minimum and recommended specifications.

The minimum tells you whether the software is likely to operate.

The recommended specifications usually tell you something closer to the experience the company wants reviewers and advertisements to show you.

Those are different standards.

If your machine barely reaches minimum requirements, do not expect maximum performance.

So, Is Render FX a Bad Deal?

Not from what we can see.

In fact, it may be a very good deal for the right customer.

Distinct AI appears to be offering exactly what many AI users have been asking for: software that runs locally, eliminates recurring credit purchases, gives users more control over their workflow and continues receiving development and additional models. The $99.99 price is not outrageous for capable desktop creative software, particularly if somebody expects to generate hundreds or thousands of images.

That is why this belongs in Something Squirrely, not Something Stinks.

The squirrel isn’t that the product is fake.

The squirrel is that the advertisement makes the economics look simpler than they really are.

“Unlimited AI images for one payment” sounds as though Distinct AI somehow eliminated the ongoing cost of generating artificial-intelligence images.

They didn’t.

They relocated it.

Your computer supplies the processing.

Your hardware determines much of the speed.

Your RAM and VRAM determine which models and configurations make sense.

Your electricity runs the machine.

And if your existing hardware is not capable enough, you are the one buying the upgrade.

That is a perfectly reasonable arrangement as long as the buyer understands it.

Know What’s Under the Hood Before You Buy

I actually like the idea behind Render FX.

Cloud subscriptions and credit systems can become expensive, and there is something appealing about software that simply runs on a machine you already own without asking for another payment every month.

For a designer, photographer, gamer, video creator or technology enthusiast who already owns powerful hardware, Render FX could make a lot of sense.

For the average person who sees a cute cyber-cat beside the words “Generate unlimited images” and assumes their ordinary desktop computer is about to become an AI powerhouse, the experience could be very different.

That is why the most important part of this advertisement is not the $99.99 price.

It is not the unlimited generations.

It is not even the absence of a subscription.

It is the sentence you have to scroll farther down the product page to find:

Recommended RAM: 32 GB. Recommended NVIDIA GPU: 12 GB VRAM.

That is where the nuts were buried.

The squirrel wasn’t lying.

He just neglected to mention that you’re expected to bring the tree.
