Google AI Mode Is Cutting Website Clicks — What Small Businesses Should Measure Instead

For twenty years, website owners learned a simple SEO equation: rank higher, earn more clicks, turn some of those clicks into customers. Generative search is making the middle of that equation less predictable. A September field experiment involving 1,100 Google users found that forcing searches into AI Mode substantially reduced visits to outside websites. That does not mean SEO is dead. It means the value of being visible in search can no longer be measured only by how many blue-link clicks arrive in Analytics.
What the Recent Study Found
Search Engine Land reported on a randomized experiment in which users assigned to Google AI Mode clicked external websites much less often than users performing ordinary Google searches. The reported difference was 18.8 percentage points in the share of searches that led to an outside site. The study also found lower visits to several major information sources. One experiment is not the final word on all search behavior, but the direction matches what publishers and businesses have worried about since AI answers began resolving more questions directly on the results page.
Google Is Also Giving Website Owners More AI Search Data
At the same time, Google has expanded Search Console reporting for generative AI features. In its website-owner update, Google says AI Overviews reach billions of monthly users and AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users. Search Console now provides more information about when pages appear in generative search experiences. That creates a new kind of SEO measurement: visibility may happen even when a user never clicks.
A Click Is Valuable, but a Customer Is the Goal
Small businesses have one advantage over publishers that depend primarily on pageviews and advertising: the goal is usually a phone call, appointment, quote request, store visit, purchase, or qualified lead. If an AI answer mentions your business accurately and a customer later searches your company name directly, calls from Google Maps, or walks into the shop, the original discovery may not show up as a neat referral click. That makes attribution messier, but it does not make the discovery worthless.
Measure Branded Demand and Real Outcomes
Watch direct and branded search traffic, Google Business Profile actions, phone calls, form submissions, quote requests, bookings, store visits where measurable, and the pages being cited or surfaced in AI search. Ask new customers how they found you. Track whether informational pages lead to later branded searches rather than expecting every useful article to generate an immediate click. Small businesses should still care about traffic, but traffic becomes one signal inside a larger customer journey.
Create Material AI Systems Have a Reason to Reference
Thin pages rewritten from everyone else’s thin pages are increasingly easy for AI systems to summarize without giving the source much credit. Original photos, firsthand examples, transparent prices where appropriate, local details, case studies, clear policies, useful comparisons, expert explanations, and real data give a page something distinct to contribute. The goal should be to become a source worth mentioning, not simply a page engineered around a keyword variation.
Do Not Abandon Traditional Search
AI Mode is growing, but ordinary search, maps, local packs, product results, direct navigation, social referrals, email, and word of mouth still exist. Search behavior is fragmenting rather than switching off overnight. Continue maintaining technical SEO, page speed, structured data, local profiles, links, accessible content, and conversion paths. The strategic change is to stop assuming that rankings and sessions tell the entire story.
Bottom Line
The era when every useful search impression was expected to become a website visit is fading. For small businesses, that is frustrating but manageable. Optimize for being understood, cited, remembered, and chosen—not merely clicked. If your content answers real customer questions and your business information is consistent across the web, AI search can still create demand even when the journey from question to customer is harder to see in a traffic chart.
